Female Cycle Wisdom for Yoga Teachers and Space Holders

Susann Pallarz & Uta Eismann share with us what it means to listen to and honor your cycle, and how to trust your body's rhythm as a way for authentic space holding.

Learning to trust our own rhythm

Our female cycles are our silent compasses to showing up more confident and authentic. For a long time, we thought becoming better space holders meant becoming more consistent, becoming louder, more visible.

Showing up with the same energy every week.
Creating new classes.
Recording new content.
Connecting with the community.
Being fully present for the people we guide.
Growing our businesses.
Keeping everything moving.

And whenever we felt tired, uninspired, or simply slower than usual, we questioned ourselves. Were we not disciplined enough? Did we need to organize ourselves better? Push a little harder?

Hello self-doubt.

Discovering a pattern

It took us quite a while to realize that we weren’t failing. We were simply moving through different phases of our female cycle.

Over the last few years, learning more about female cycle awareness has profoundly changed the way we work, teach and live. Not because it suddenly made everything easier, but because it helped us meet ourselves with a little more understanding and a little more compassion.

And even when we could meet ourselves with that compassion - there was still the pressure of society. Yet, instead of constantly trying to meet the same expectations every single day, we slowly started asking ourselves a different question:

What do I need today?

It sounds simple, but for us it wasn’t.

Like many women, we had become very good at ignoring the subtle signals our bodies were sending us. Rest felt unproductive. Saying no felt uncomfortable. Slowing down often came with guilt. Not to mention, FOMO was very frequently present when we chose rest over social events.

While we are now surrounded by people who totally understand a message of: ‘I am on day 2, I just want to stay home,’ there was a learning curve and courage to get there and stand up for our needs.

Turning a burden into something profoundly life-changing

Our bodies don’t move in straight lines. Nature doesn’t either.

There are days when everything feels expansive. Ideas come easily, conversations flow, and holding space feels effortless. And there are other days when all we long for is quiet, a journal, a walk through the forest, or an afternoon without making decisions.

Neither version of ourselves is better. Both belong.

Understanding the different phases of our female cycle helped us stop judging these changes and start working with them instead of against them. We noticed that after our period, we naturally had more energy to create. It became a beautiful time to plan retreats, write newsletters or dream up new ideas.

Around ovulation, we often felt more open and connected. Recording videos, teaching workshops or having meaningful conversations suddenly required much less effort.

Later in our cycle, we became more reflective. We noticed what no longer felt aligned, where clearer boundaries were needed or where something in our businesses wanted to be simplified. Beyond this, a certain irritability often surfaced. In this part of her cycle, Susann found herself more prone to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety, while Uta frequently noticed a tendency to measure herself against others.

In addition to that, Perimenopause asks for another understanding of cycle awareness.

It took some months of female cycle tracking, observing our emotions, behaviors, reactions, to realize the patterns. The monthly biological change, hormone drops and everything connected to it on a physical level, clearly showed its impact in a holistic way.

Our immune system weakens. The nervous system weakens. Our energy levels go down. On the other hand: our inner connection is much stronger, our intuition is clearer, and we feel our needs much better than during the more outgoing phases of the cycle.

Slowly, we learned to use what once looked like a very annoying and challenging time of our cycles to our advantage: We started to plan our lives and business in alignment with our cycles - most of the time.

Of course, life doesn’t always allow us to organise everything around it. We all have responsibilities, commitments, and days when we simply need to show up - especially as mothers or caregivers. So even now there are days we struggle. Sometimes, we teach on day three, and we meet up with that friend who is in town once a year on our most unsociable day, just because life is still life.

Meeting ourselves with kindness

For us, cycle awareness has never been about following strict rules. It’s simply another way of listening. One more layer of understanding that helps us meet ourselves and others with more kindness and make choices that feel more sustainable.

As space holders, we spend so much time learning to observe others. We notice how people breathe, where they hold tension, when they need encouragement, and when they need rest. But how often do we offer ourselves that same attention? Especially in the beginning of our journey, it’s easy to believe we need to keep doing more.

More trainings.
More workshops.
More retreats.
More content.
More classes.

We know that feeling well. Yet the space holders who have inspired us most over the years weren’t necessarily the ones with the most certificates or the most creative sequences. They were the ones who felt deeply authentic.

People trusted them because they trusted themselves. We don’t think authenticity is something we can learn overnight. We believe it grows every time we choose to listen to ourselves instead of comparing ourselves to everyone else. Every time we act according to our needs, rather than pleasing somebody else, the relationship with our inner wisdom and bodies strengthens.

For us, that also includes understanding our nervous systems. Because we can only hear our inner voice when everything else becomes a little quieter.

Sometimes that looks like meditation.
Sometimes it’s a slow yoga practice.
Sometimes it is a conscious gaze into the sky.
Sometimes it’s sitting by the lake, watching the water without needing to be anywhere else.

Those moments remind us that we don’t have to earn our worth through productivity. That our value as space holders isn’t measured by how much we do, but by how present we are. This understanding has become such an important part of both of our journeys that we felt called to share it with others.

Integrating Female Cycle Wisdom

We don’t believe there is one perfect way to teach yoga or hold space. But we do believe that when we begin trusting our own rhythm instead of constantly trying to keep up with someone else’s, something softens.

The way we teach changes.
The way we lead changes.
The way we run our businesses changes.

Because we cannot expect others to be more compassionate with us and soft when it comes to the female cycle, if we don’t manage to integrate that wisdom for ourselves first. And perhaps most importantly, the relationship we have with ourselves changes too.
